Here in Cali. I've seen them use a handheld device that measures the amount of light through the window.

 

They have it here too. BUt unless the cop is a mega dick, they get away with it. Theres a ricer running around with 50% windshield, and limo tint sides. Never been dinged once.

 

Yeah there's some people here with the tinted windshield. The all escalades

If you want to escape all tint laws you can cut the tint 2" short from the front window then put tinted rain guards on the door or ptm them. Cops pull you over an he goes to take a reading an the tint is too low for his meter. Had a buddy do this. If done right you can't tell the tint is cut short from the outside .
But I'd just order some 30% or lower% precut off eBay for like 8 bucks. Buy a couple sets. That's what I did an now if I get pulled over an get a ticket I just take the tint off then go to the police an show them it's fixed then go home an put one of my other sets of tint on. I've done this three times before haha. Once with my truck an twice with my bronco.

Thinking about adding a brow to the windshield, which will make them darker.

 

The guy that I go to won't do anything but what KY law allows. Too much of a risk to what keeps his family fed if he gets busted. Can't say as I blame him there. He did 2 layers on the back that got me to about 10%. We can spraypaint our rear window if we want so long as we have side mirrors.

I've had 5% all around and while it was fantastic during the day... it sucks at night. I haul too many trailers at night now to not be able to see them when backing up.
